The 2nd China International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo (HFCE 2008) will be next week, November 18th-20th, 2008, at the Shanghai Exhibition Center in Shanghai, China. The main focus of HFCE 2008 is fuel cell applications in the telecommunications industry with a focus on the industrialization of 1-10-kW fuel cell systems.
12,000 attendees are expected, and our own Bob Rose will be giving a presentation on the U.S. fuel cell industry. For more information, please visit http://www.hfce.cn/.
China is emerging as a leading supporter of fuel cell technology so it will be interesting to see the exhibitions and announcements from participating companies. If you are interested, Fuel Cells 2000 has a compilation of international roadmaps, initiatives, activities and programs.
Recently, it was announced that one of the leading auto manufacturers in China, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. Group (SAIC), was working on the development of fuel cell vehicles with fuel cell manufacturer Shanghai Shen Li High Tech Co. Ltd. Three fuel cell vehicles have been developed using the popular Chao Yue vehicle which is based on Volkswagen’s Santana sedan. The latest model, the Chao Yue III, can attain a top speed of 110 km/h using Shen Li’s 60-kw fuel cell. The most recent development from the pairing, introduced in 2007, is the Shanghai fuel cell vehicle. 20 cars were deployed for the recent summer Beijing Olympics to shuttle VIPs, athletes and visitors around the city.
.
We will be updating Fuel Cell Insider readers with pictures and updates from the show, so stay tuned.

So China is now blaming us for their econmic woes - Bob better keep his hand on his wallet.Regardless, if SAIC can fast track their vehicle to produce something like a smaller Honda Clarity while the big three are chasing bail-out bucks, they might be able to short circuit General Motors 30 year, $500M investment in FCVs. I hope not, for Detroit and America’s sake.

Well Jim,You have to admire the Asains. They re picking up where the U.S. has left off. Japan is not the second largest economy in the world because they are stupid. They learned well from the old timer Americans who knew how to do business. If it wasn’t for the small businessman/ woman in this country, the U.S. would be a third world nation. Here in Georgia, Georgia Power Co. wants to install two more nuclear units and the associated xmission lines and sub stations–doesn’t that say something about our industry, especially where Fuel Cells installations are expanding all over the world? Why are they afraid of Fuel Cells? Central power plants are an obselete technology–better left back in the 20th century where they served us well. Distributed power is the 21st century technology. We need 21st century Captains of industry–not obselete thinking corporate execs. who keep walking backwards viewing the past and continually tripping over the future. Romney, in his campaign, stated “Michigan’s problems are Americas problems.” Michigan, Detroit, and the auto industry made their own problems. The end game is (for those that play chess) is just about over for Michigan and the American auto industry. No-one in that state has the ability or guts to do the surgery that is needed to save both. Asia sees the Fuel Cell as the answer to most power problems, as they saw the value of the electronics and auto developed in the U.S and then went on to take over the industries.
